It was built in 1484 and dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary. For more than 500 hundred years it has been the residence of Montenegrin bishops and it has represented the greatest place of Montenegrin spirit and culture since its foundation. The monastery has gotten its name after the great ruler St. Peter of Cetinje (Petar I Petrovi\u0107 Njego\u0161) and his entire relics have been placed inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During its existence, the monastery has witnessed many events that turned out to be significant towards the fate of Montenegro. It has been burnt many times by the Ottomans, but each time it would be renewed by the Montenegrin rulers. In the 18th century, metropolitan Danilo Petrovi\u0107 renewed the monastery after being totally destroyed after the attack of Mahmut Pasha Bu\u0161atlija by building a new one across the site of the first location. The monastery was the place where the first printing house at southern Slavs was transferred, nearly after its foundation. Also, the first primary school in Montenegro was built here.
